Hernia Surgery

Well, here is the newest - yes I know it changes like the wind. So, Cameron is scheduled for hernia surgery on Thursday at 10. Then, hopefully she may be discharged over the weekend. Please continue to pray for her. Today I was heartbroken as I sat and watched two other babies go home from the Special Care Nursery and knowing that we were to go home today as well. But I trust that this is the best for Cameron...even if her family misses her terribly. I pray that this extra time will allow for us to straighten out the feeding issues with Reagan so that we can smoothly transition home.

  2. I'm sorry nothing goes as planned! I do want you to know that I think it's a good thing that they are going to fix Cameron's hernia before she comes home. Here's why... Evan came home with his hernia and was to return once he got bigger to have it repaired. Well, nothing ever goes as planned and he wasn't home but a few days and we were back at Duke to have his hernia surgery. However, once they leave the NICU they can't go back so we were on the pediatric floor. He was still under 4lbs and struggling to wake up from anesthesia and here we were on the pediatric floor where mom and dad watch the monitors and are more responsible for his care. I was begging for them to take him back to the NICU! And the peds floor is filled with germs!!! And you do not have the one on one care that you do from the NICU. It is soooo hard to wait and getting your hopes up for her to come home only to have it delayed is horrible, but I think in the long run it was an answered prayer! Also, Evan had the same cortisol problem. I had to compound his hydrocortisone every 3 days at home and he had to have "stress doses" for sickness and surgeries. So let me know if you have any questions on that. Will she be coming home on hydrocortisone dosed daily? B/c I know it has to be make every 3 days and that is a lot of running back and forth to the pharmacy and I can help you with that from home.

  3. Michelle,

As far as I know we only have the medicine and must administer the shot if she is sick or has surgery as well - like she will get a dose for this Thursday. They have not told me that it will go bad after 3 days but now that you mention it, a nurse mentioned to me that we would have to add some type of liquid to it...I dont know it all runs together. Did you ever end up having to administer the shot other than for the hernia?

  4. Evan had to have the hydrocortisone dosed every 4 hours at home for the first few months. It is given in the injectable form in the hospital and can be made/compounded into an oral form for home use. The problem is the oral form is only good for 3 days and has to be stored in the fridge. Since I'm a pharmacist I was allowed to get the injectable solu-cortef and make it into the oral form at home so I only had to go to the pharmacy every month to pick up the supplies to make it. He did need a few "stress doses" but it was only when he was sick or in the hospital (re-hospitalized for other problems) and since I had the oral form made up we just used that. So if she needs a daily dose of hydrocortisone for adrenal gland insufficiency (i.e. cortisol levels) I can help you out by making it at home if you and your doctors are comfortable with it.
